Words of Wisdom

What It Means to Be "THE CHIEF"

Leadership is not about rank — it is about presence, trust, and excellence. As a Chief Petty Officer, I strive to embody these guiding principles every day:

1. Be Present

Show up fully for your people. Be the Chief who is there — physically, mentally, and emotionally — when it matters most. Leadership starts with being visible and approachable.

2. Lead from a Distance

Empower your team to grow. Give them the tools, guidance, and trust to develop in their own way. True leadership is measured by how well your people perform when you're not standing over them.

3. Be the Expert

Master your craft. Stay sharp on avionics, maintenance, and procedures so you become the go-to person your team can rely on. Knowledge earned through experience is the foundation of credible leadership.

My Charge

I charge you to take a moment, step back, and be truly proud of your accomplishments. Recognize the hard work, late nights, and challenges you have overcome to reach where you are today.

Never forget to thank the family, friends, and shipmates who stood beside you — the ones who supported you through the tough times, celebrated your victories, and helped carry the load.

In your own way — whether through quiet gratitude, quality time, or meaningful gestures — show them the same dedication they have shown you. True success is never achieved alone.
